No one is seriously talking about firing him
Some people wanted his head after a dreadful loss to another mediocre team. The question is broader than "fire Mendenhall". It's more "whither BYU"?

Is BM, after nearly a decade, taking BYU to the level of TCU or Utah? Clearly not. Even if a Big 12 invite magically appeared tomorrow, we know that BYU would be lucky to win more than a couple conference games right now. Taysom Hill pasted a bad Texas team, but against the top of the conference they'd look like Texas A&M @ Alabama.

Citing 8-5 seasons against WAC teams like SJSU, Utah State and Nevada is as helpful as talking about your HS grades in college. The question is not if BM goes packing tomorrow, but how much longer do you give him? Are the goals of the program to have nominal winning seasons against mediocre competition, or to actually get highly ranked teams on a regular basis? It's been 5 years since BYU finished ranked. If the team plays this poorly next season, a winning year will be out of the question against Nebraska, E. Carolina, UCLA, and MWC teams like SJSU and Utah State that suddenly seem to be able to pull even with BYU.
