We've been beaten many times over the years by teams that are simply too fast, more physical, more athletic, all three, etc. While most of us seem to believe BYU is capable of putting together elite teams, it's tough to expect any coaching staff to field top level depth and talent consistently. We can be very good but will only compete with the very elite when our stars align. I can live with that at BYU.
What's aggravating is when we can't play to our strengths. If nothing else, we should be a team that can keep its head and play smart and effectively under pressure and/or adverse circumstances. I just don't see it lately. We make as many reactionary, flat-out-dumb penalties, lose our crud in hostile environments (Boise St.), underperform to our ability or fail to rise to the occasion just like every other mediocre team out there. Too often, the boneheaded plays come from alleged team leaders.
There's no reason for this. With the volume of individuals who are older and have missionary experience, we should have effective on field leadership in excess. At the very least, we should be able to play up to our level best when the chips are down and/or the game is on the line.
We haven't been doing this, and when a Bronco team goes down by 14 points, it's game over. Bronco seems to be a very disciplined individual in his personal life and reportedly holds very regimented, tough practices--why there's often such a lack of this discipline among his teams is somewhat puzzling to me.
