Detmer wasn't kept around in the NFL because of his on the field play, it was due to his ability to mentor and coach younger QB's in the West Coast offense and help them elevate their play.

Also Does Howell have nearly 4 yrs of college starting experience running a top 25 offense, winning numerous national awards (including a Heisman) and tutelage under some of the best offensive minds in the game? Last, coaching high school in Utah doesn't exactly compare with coaching high school football in Texas. I don't think comparing Howell and Detmer is a good comparison. The Detmer name is very well regarded and respected in Texas HS football and Ty would bring a load of connections around the state that would benefit BYU in recruiting. I don't think you can say the same about Howell in Utah.
