when speaking of Bronco. He mentioned how respected Bronco is among his peers.
Bronco has been invited to some very special meeting(s) (conferences) consisting of only the top coaches in the nation. Bronco mentioned as he looked around the room, the coaches had national championship titles to their credit, many conferences titles, etc. At first he wondered why was he even invited? It didn't take long before the question of why was answered. He was bombarded with: "how can you be so successful with the type of players you are limited in recruiting at BYU?" "How can you be successful with the missionary program and so many of your players leaving for two years?" (religious, academic, honor code, etc.)
Some coaches mentioned openly they do not sign a recruit unless his goal is to be in the NFL by his senior year. They continued with, we don't care about their education. We place them in classes that appear to be directing them to some sort of graduation to comply with the NCAA guidelines.
Bronco ended up basically baring his testimony to them. He also spoke on how these young men have an average career in the NFL of 3 years. Within ten years they are bankrupt, divorced, and most are dependent on some form of pain medication. At BYU, they want the athlete to be a contributing member to society for the rest of his/her life once their career of choice is over. This was on the first day. The second day was filled with additional questions, some sports related and some Church related.
The respect that Bronco has among all coaches includes assistant coaches, as well. A while back through ESPN, it was brought up about how many assistant coaches from across the country would love to coach with Bronco. They know he does it right and does it well.
Perhaps as fans, we need to understand the obstacles BYU's coaches face when compared to the rest of the nation's schools. What BYU's goals are compared to the rest of the nation's schools. And recognized we have unique and very qualified coaches working with very unique athletes in all sports. Athletes, who look beyond the playing field or court. They understand the bigger picture of life. And yes, they remain competitive and successful with this knowledge.
This is why I financially, emotionally, and mentally support BYU Athletics and Academics.
