I know it varies by industry, but I am firmly in the camp that an individual should always be open to better opportunities, regardless of situation. especially after having been part of dealing with a reduction in force at my employment.

you don't owe your employer anything other than your work responsibilities/contract. Because just as Cosmo said, they will cut anyone loose if they feel like they need to.
