Regardless of circumstances...BYU misplayed the opportunity and ......
miscalculated the landscape of college football and their opportunities moving forward. They put a positive spin on it and the fan base bought it for the first few years.....which would have been sustainable in my opinion.....IF, they had done what was necessary to be successful as an independent moving forward. Tom Holmoe has held up his end of the bargain with scheduling (albeit mostly for good to great away games) but the performance of the football team itself has just not moved the meter. You have to have both (if you are not Notre Dame). BYU cannot afford to play great schedules moving forward and be out of the national conversation by the end of September. Notre Dame can sustain poor seasons because they have decades of success and a large loyal fan base. BYU's fan base is limited and is having a hard time being loyal right now.
