I think Harvey Jackson added to it as well. People would rather have had someone who is black playing over someone who is white in the secondary, because they often assume they have more ability for the position than the white guy...

For the record, BYU has had some real quality players at the safety position over the years... some even made it to the NFL (Francisco, Sorenson) or could have (Rich).
