Here is BYU's pitch to fans, recruits, media and the P5...
...as an independent:
We have ever increasing difficult schedules, we have our own TV deal with ESPN and while we may yet be considered a full fledged P5 program yet, we are certainly not a G5 program.
Here is BYU pitch to fans, recruits, media and the P5 as a member of the MWC (or AAC or any other G5 conference): we are not P5.
Short of a P5 invite, BYU's best bet is to stay the course in independence.
Oh, and if Boise had done what they did the last 10-12 with the schedules BYU has coming up in the next ten years, they'd be talking about national championships. not just BCS/NY6 bowl wins.
