The only way BYU would be able to keep up is if the church was willing to
chip in. The fact that the sports program is one of the few to profit tells you practically nothing. I basically just says that they are less willing to spend money, which is consistent with the LDS church (for better and worse).
BYU's actual earnings from the sports program is just a fraction of what other major programs make, thus they will fall behind if the current trend holds.
