BYU lacks the across the board athleticism to accomodate going off script on D

The front seven has to be disciplined because the secondary isn't fast enough to react and cover voids left by the kind of improvisation that allows great athletes to make great plays. Disciplined play up front is required to mask the deficiencies in the secondary. Even if Bronco were to get the athletes in the secondary, I'm not sure that he's flexible enough to change his approach overall.
