I think that BYU football does more than provide for entertainment, but
it's an indirect effect.
I'm sure that having BYU Football increases donations--but I think that the increase in donations is immaterial when compared to the potential outflow of cash that the Church would need to make in order to put the program on par with top tier P5 schools. As evidence, look at how many people directly contribute to the football program...it's pathetic.
