As I understand it, that's what killed the wishbone offenses in the 70's (I wasn't alive at that point, so I can't say for certain).
The hope, though, is that after football's mass exodus to Pro-Style, West Coast, and Spread offenses, that the read-option is unique/rare enough that defenses can't devote enough time to it to completely shut it down.
