A couple of points.
I think the vast majority of inside runs are read option and that there are very few (if any) straight dive calls out of split backs. I believe Hill's eyes are (almost) always on the DE when he's handing off and the blocking scheme always seems to be c/w RO. Furthermore, after what I think is the worst game for inside run futility (UVA '13) Hill admitted that the plays were RO and that he gave to the RB way too much.

Fans of many programs that run read option, including Oregon, complain about futile runs up the middle.

I personally think BYU fans 'over-remember' the unsuccessful inside runs and 'under-remember' the unsuccessful pass plays. I just skimmed the ESPN for 11/12 of BYU's games last year and BYU almost never had 3 and outs in which 2 of the plays were runs. IMO, the inside option has been far more successful than many BYU fans seem to recognize. I think there's a lot of expectation bias.
