He references some recent encounters with the police department that made him
not trust that department anymore, and (according to him) started to record because he thought this cop was there related to the previous incidents (the cop denied this and said he was just randomly there and didn't know who the man was). No idea what those encounters were.

But even so, standing in your front yard and videoing the police is legal, and the cop gave no other reason why he stopped, and this led to an unnecessary (IMO) escalation. I would be ticked if anybody drew a weapon on me.
