There are 39 bowl games including the semi-finals and national championship game
Theoretically, 76 teams will get to go to a bowl game if they all qualify, while only 52 are left out.
Conversely, there are 347 D-1 college basketball teams. Each year, only 68 teams make the field for the NCAA tournament. I'm not going to do the math, but, you can clearly see that a much higher percentage of college football teams go to a bowl game when compared to the percentage of college basketball teams that make the field of 68.
Making the field of 68 in college hoops is a much bigger deal than making a bowl game in college football.
