I think he looked good running through the passing tree but did not do that well 'in practice' when it came to anything that resembled actual game situations. IMO, he didn't impress in scrimmages and when people that I trusted reported from practice, they made it clear that, while he had an occasional highlight throw (mostly to Apo), he wasn't exactly lighting things up.

Now there are people both on and off the team that disagreed with that assessment, hence the controversy re RN. But it's clear to me that the coaches saw some things that gave them pause and history shows there was a reason to be worried.
