What about the wife's commitment to her husband?
It's not like she's sick, she just plain doesn't want to go. She's tired. She needs a break. Keyword = she. Sometimes she needs to suck it up and take one for the team, too.
Not to mention the fact that it would be incredibly rude to cancel at this point, sometimes you have to suck it up, be an adult, and do something you don't want to do in order to support your spouse.
