You could take BART to Fremont and drive from there

There is a public transportation system in Palo Alto, but as mentioned it's a horrible round about way from Pleasanton. The BART has expansion plans that may make it easier in the future, but I think Fremont is about the furthest you can get without adding exponential time to your commute by taking BART the other direction.
