The advantage to the bay area is living a low standard of living compared to
your peers and then you have boatloads of discretionary income. With a family, you might not be willing to make that choice. You'll end up paying a high percentage of your income on house and cost of living and it's hard to get ahead that way. The other issue is taxes. You get phased out of all the breaks intended for the middle class even though you are living a middle class lifestyle.
