Not sure I completely agree, and this may be a bit different from SOS arguments,
but most of the P5 conferences require so many P5 level games be played as part of the OOC schedule. Giving BYU P5 status allows these teams to count playing BYU as part of the P5 OOC requirement. BSU, regardless of their ranking or national perception, doesn't qualify as a P5 game, so P5 schools can't as freely schedule them as they do BYU.

I agree that we are very accomodating for home schedules for big name schools and that wouldn't change too much if we were to join a non-P5 conference, but by losing the P5 status would make it much more difficult to keep the types of schedules we have now. Just my thoughts
