My biggest complaint about Rose (and really one of the only ones) is that he
stuck with the MWC style defense in the WCC. MWC is filled with athletes who aren't good enough shooters (the reason they ended up at UNLV, UNM, and SDSU) so Rose packed the middle, rebounded, and let teams shoot from the outside. In the WCC it was just a different style. Think of the one team in the MWC that was not a normal contender and made a short run at the top for a couple of years......Air Force. What style of play do they run? Something very similar to the WCC style. They had shooters, handful of guys shooting over 40% from behind the arc. Rose's defense at the end of his MWC run were statistically great defenses. His first team in the WCC was a great defense too because they had Davies, Hartsock, and Abuou with Harrison, Austin, Winder off the bench. Defensively they had players. They played a lot of man and just put Abuou on the best player on the guard line and in the zone had Noah and Abuou guarding the corner threes which has long been a killer for the BYU zone.

The style of defense that Rose played in the MWC is not a good fit for the WCC and then when you have not had great defenders either over the past couple of years it was just compounded.

This year expect to see a dramatic jump in defense. Both in style (pack line defense with Quincy) and in players.
