more games than any other decade, so yes I do think the style is working.
Roger Reid played a slower, half court set, physical style of play and didn't get any better results.
On defense we have been physical with our best teams. Chris Miles was a beast in the post on defense, as were Emery/Abuou on the wings. We've been able to grind out wins at times. And we've won a few games we may not otherwise b/c of the offensive freedom and the attacking style.
It's not like we're running Nolan Smith's 40 Minutes of Hell. That would be a personnel misfit. We simply push the pace, play on attack, look for an advantage on the break and take it if it's there (often leading to transition 3's, a strength we'll always be able to recruit to), and then pull it out if it's not there. Makes a ton of sense to me.
I see the issues the last 4 years having to do more with personnel than system. Injuries hurt our depth, mission timing didn't sync well, and we had a dearth of talent in the post in between solid combos of Davies/Hartsock and the incoming Mika/Aytes/Dastrup group that could be fantastic.
It's so hard to win consistently win our constraints, so while I've been disappointed with the outcomes, I attribute it more to systemic BYU issues versus coaching. Again, look back at the records of the teams in the last 60 years. There has NEVER been a period of time where we're pumping out nationally relevant teams year after year. It doesn't happen.
So I see Dave Rose as a GREAT coach for BYU. He's maximizing BYU's potential as a regional school, and has built a solid program. Is he great compared to the best of the best? (Calipari, Pitino, Coach K, Izzo, etc.) Tough to know, b/c we've never seen him coach with that kind of talent. BYU isn't considered an elite/great basketball program (more strong/solid/respected), so he probably falls in that set versus elite as well. Brad Stevens was elite.
I'm not aware of an elite coach that would take a BYU job, so I'd suggest adjust your expectations, enjoy watching some scoring, and let's hope for a few more tourney wins.
