IMO, you are on the right track with 9mm as well. Best blend of ammo capacity, mild recoil, and the newest 147 grain hollow point ammo performs great.
I do also suggest considering ammo capacity - needs are different if you are planning for strictly close up personal defense vs potentially engaging and taking down an active shooter or terrorist threat.
I really like the single stack 9's (I had an XDS 9 that I ended up selling), but considering what I need my CCW for (personal defense, LE criminal intervention, active shooter engagement, defense of citizens, etc) I needed more ammo capacity. Hence, I carry a G26, one in the chamber with a 10 round mag, and always have a 17 round magazine from a G17 on my person as a backup. Gives me 28 rounds, close to the minimum of what I would want if engaging an active shooter - I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with 12 or 13 total rounds, especially if that shooter had armor.
In casual clothes, I wear the gun IWB on the right hip with the extra mag in my pocket. In dress clothes, I wear the gun in the same place, and carry my 17 round mag on my left ankle, as I hate the pocket bulge in slacks.
