PR, Lavell was much better than Bronco. Bronco is not Lavell, and they DO have very, very different personalities. But very, very few coaches have the PR talent of Lavell. I don't think it denigrates Lavell in any way to say that Bronco is the right kind of coach to succeed at BYU.

From my perspective, and on this separate issue that isn't related to my original post, what I see is that any serious PR blunders by Bronco occurred in his first years of coaching (full disclosure, I have never thought any of them to be a big deal anyway, and actually, many of them calling out fans, IMO, were justified). Many fans, for one reason or another, became offended to the point that they now do not see just how much Bronco has learned and improved his PR skills. "Inside BYU Football" on BYUtv would never have happened without Bronco for example.

Many cannot forgive him for those early PR blunders. There is an over-sensitivity to the things that he now says that are really innocuous. It reminds me of the USU and Utah fans that actively search for any minor thing that has been done by anyone connected to BYU, that can be construed as wrong, in order to point their finger at BYU and say, "Boo! See how hypocritical BYU is!"

I think that many fans cannot forgive Bronco after they were once offended by something he said in the past. That is their choice and, to be honest, I don't necessarily blame them for it. That's just not the way that I choose to be toward any of the coaches.
