You may be right that the decision makers could be afraid to invite BYU because of social issues. That said, if these social issues did come about, it would only add to the money made not take away. Controversy is interesting, it's entertaining. Talk of a BYU boycott for example would only fuel viewership and interest. I add BYU for this reason alone. Think about the Missouri game this last year. That went from basically a blip on the college football radar to a major story. This had nothing to do with BYU and everything to do with the supposed racism that was happening on their campus. BYU brings storylines and interest in their own right.
