The whole threat of being kicked out of school for moral transgression always
has bothered me. Heres my problems with it.

1. Confession should be encouraged. It is a very cathartic and healthy experience to get things off your chest. Fear of being kicked out of school for word of wisdom or law of chastity reasons probably stops many people from confession and making the actual progress they need to to progress and get better and get help. I'm sometimes jealous of the anonymous confession that I see on TV with catholic priests. I could see myself doing a lot more confessing if it were more like that...haha. To me confession should be more about getting help and not as much about lets find out how to punish you for this thing you just confessed.

2. BYU is the right place or should be the right place for people to mend their lives. Why get kicked out of school to go home or to another school and mend and then come back once already mended? Shouldn't the spiritually struggling person be able to be at BYU to find their way there within the safe confines there?

3. It gives too much power to men. It allows for the creepy or overzealous or self righteous bishop or the gestapo nature of the honor code office or snitches. Just creates more weirdness than I find necessary.

4. It feeds into the under reporting of rape/abuse

5. The punishment of not being able to go to school doesn't really fit the crime. Does it really make sense to say "Sally you shouldn't do heroin, Now go to your room and don't get an education...that will teach you!"

6. There is often no honor in turning someone else in for a personal failing that isn't affecting anyone else but them. I think the honor code should be personal and voluntary. Academic dishonor needs to be enforced and punished and monitored....but word of wisdom and law of chastity...I see no value in letting people snitch on people for that.
