Many BYU fans (not sure the percentage) have completely unrealistic expectations for BYU's OC's.
I believe this is for several reasons.

1)Lavell's offenses spoiled many BYU fans and left them thinking that it was just a matter of play calling and scheme, when it was as much about talent, recruiting and the level of competition made BYU look like an offensive juggernaut. But look at the games against P5 (for lack of a better term) schools under Lavell vs WAC or other non power teams. Generally BYU did not score as many points and I LeVell had a losing record against such teams in bowl games.

Also, LaVell's points per game average decreased in the 90's. We can debate the reasons why, but part of it certainly was because defenses changed, going away from the zone defenses of the 70's and 80's and are now man-press-blitz oriented which makes things much more difficult for QB's to make good reads and throws.

2) The Maddenization of many fans who think that just because they can score 80 points a game playing Madden (or College Football before the O'Bannon lawsuit) that calling a real game is simple and fan ignorance. There are far to many, and I seem to sit next to such people in the stands more often than not, who think that every running play that does not gain at least 5 yards was a total mistake and a brain fart on the part of the offensive coordinator Here are the realities of calling plays.

--sometimes the play doesn't work because one or more players do not do their jobs
--Sometimes a play doesn't work because the DC made the right defensive call that countered the play you called
--Sometimes a defensive player makes a great play

Far too many BYU fans do not understand how a game plan is made and what an offensive coach is trying to do. it is not just a matter of calling the right play against the defensive scheme. When playing a computer football game, the CPU controlled players will do exactly what they are programed to do, every time in every situation. IRL, defensive players do keep their assignments but often improvise and just make plays or get beat because they were out of position. Plays are sometimes called because they are setting up another play. I got so frustrated this past year with fans sitting next to me complaining about this or that play call from Anae, saying that he was far too predictable and was just stupid, only to see that exact play get called a quarter that goes for a big gain or even a touchdown. A couple times at the games i yelled, sarcastically of course, "what a horrible play call" when previously

Remember on the last drive of the Nebraska game? The big play that set up the Hail Mary was a draw play, that worked probably about half the time through the year. In that situation against Nebraska, it was very risky but unpredictable play call and went for something like 25 yards (I think) and got BYU close enough so set up the Mangum-Mathews Miracle. Sometimes during the year that play worked well, but sometimes it did not. When it did not work was it a bad play call?

While being a colossal d@#$% b@#, Lane Kiffin is considered by many to be one of the best offensive minds in the country. Nick Saban, hired him for crying out loud. But can anyone go out and say that every play that guy has ever called worked perfectly every time? I doubt it.

I am not saying this to reignite the debate about Robert's play calling. I personally think he was a very good OC who sometimes got a bit too predictable.

I have know doubt that Ty will be a very good OC. He has a tremendous football mind. He knows what he is doing. There are numerous testimonials of how he was like an extra coach when he was in the NFL. But Ty will make mistakes. He will call plays that won't work. And there will be growing pains since his offense will be new to the players. But you can bet sure as I am writing this, that the offense will be good by the end of this season and not just because the November schedule is easier than the September schedule. But I am not going to yell from the stands that a particular call was a bad one, since i generally did not do it before.
