I don't love that being the first conversation I have with people. I have had numerous meaningful discussions about the Church at work, but they come by talking with friends not first time acquaintances.
On my mission we learned BRT- build relationships of trust. I prefer to get to know people at little first and then there's a foundation of trust on which to have meaningful discussions of the gospel. If people meet you and one second later are saying oh you're Mormon, what's with that polygamy thing, or that black thing, or that gay thing, how much influence do you think you're going to have to change their perception of what the gospel is really all about?
Also, I already have a kid at the Y as a sophomore, and she loves it and I love having here there. I never said I steered my kids away from BYU, I said I've considered it.
