BYU does require proactive effort to find your way in to cool companies but...
...it's definitely well regarded and not hard to get into tech if you work at it.

Do you live in NYC? If so, you might not be seeing what's going on on the ground here. I don't love the name "Silicon Slopes" as it feels like a "me-too" strategy, but the tech and entrepreneurial environment here is pretty hopping. The increase in students doesn't all need to be in the business school. A lot of it could and should be in engineering. I'm part of a business owner group of BYU alums and we toured a bunch of Bay Area companies (Facebook, Google, Tesla, among others) and they had a good number of BYU team members - I'm sure we could place more with more engineering students.

But for me to get my first job in investment banking out of BYU undergrad I did need to network hard. Nobody looked down on the degree, but you had to go out there to get your foot in the door - they didn't all just flock to BYU. Out of BYU MBA I didn't have to network as hard and had four offers (i-banking, PE fund of funds, Treasury at Cisco, and a hedge fund). It's pretty solid - not elite, but solid. It's awesome for entrepreneurship and a student-run VC fund we started is helping place a good number into VC/PE now.
