Not sure what you are expecting. Definitely not a stretch...
Several of these coaches were very successful as players too, which can only help as they coach others to be the same.

Cahoon - All-WAC at BYU, all time receptions leader in the CFL where he spent 13 years, 10 time all star, previously coached WRs at BYU. Has all of the experience and leadership needed to be an excellent WRs coach at BYU.

Clark - Coached Brad Sorensen at SUU who was later drafted into the NFL, has been an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Weber State and SUU. Graduate assistant at BYU for two years, Tight ends coach is definitely not a stretch.

Detmer - Grew up under the tutelage of a reputable high school coach in Texas, All-America in college, Heisman Trophy winner, was a QB consultant/coach for much of his 14 year NFL career, and turned around a private high school team in Texas thereafter. Installing a complex pro offense at BYU. Has all the attributes necessary to be an excellent offensive coordinator.

Empey - All-WAC at BYU, graduate assistant at BYU for two years, UNLV tight ends coach, Snow College Head coach, offensive tackles and tight ends coach at BYU in 2000, and tight ends coach from 2001-2004. O line coach is definitely not a stretch.

Gifford - Excellent BYU corner, successful corner coach at SUU, and now in the same position at the Y. Definitely not a stretch.

Kaufusi - Successful position coach at the U before joining BYU's staff. Linebackers coach is not a stretch at all.

Lamb - Enough said

Mahe - All-MWC at BYU where he thrived as a versatile running back, spent 5 years in the NFL. Running back coach is not a stretch at all.

Tuiaki - Former linebacker and fullback in college, coached linebackers, defensive line, fullbacks, running backs, tight ends, and special teams at Utah State, Utah, and Oregon State. Has steadily risen to positions of greater responsibility. DC is a natural progression.
