could still turn on everything electrical inside the car, but the engine wouldn't turn over. Now the fob does nothing and nothing in the car will work. Could that be a battery connection?

Mine has a little notch in the steering column where you place the corner of the fob before hitting the start button.

It's a key with a transponder chip that has a locks/horn/lights/whatever fob built into it.

Sounds like symptoms of corrosion in the cables or simply bad cable connection.
