Update - Someone tried to jump start the car, but nothing happened. My wife was

testing the buttons on the fob, and the only button that worked was the panic button, but then it wouldn't turn off

Someone helped her disconnect the battery so the horn would stop honking. When they reconnected the battery it started honking again. So the batter is now disconnected again.

The tow truck is on its way, but is about 30 minutes out.

A bus full of kids in trek clothing just stopped at the rest stop, so my wife is going to see if any leaders are handy with cars...

Mine has a little notch in the steering column where you place the corner of the fob before hitting the start button.

Nope. My sons toyota corolla had a bad key fob which basically prevented the fuel pump from working

It's a key with a transponder chip that has a locks/horn/lights/whatever fob built into it.

Sounds like symptoms of corrosion in the cables or simply bad cable connection.

Not likely if the battery was showing it was charged. The alternator would drain the battery.
