So my niece's husband has been working for me for a few years on the weekends. He's a huge Ute fan so there's a lot of bantering back and forth, but all in kind.
Anyway, I never put it together before but his younger brother is Joe Tukuafu. He was talking with me and my older brother, who's also on CB, about what happened.
Joe never signed with Utah State when he got back from his mission as many believe. He signed with BYU.
The only thing Aggie related is his LOI.
They have begged Coach Wells for a release but coach Wells told them no because Utah State paid for him to take his tests (I believe ACT and SAT). Joe's father came back with the receipts showing that he paid for all the tests and not Utah State. Then coach Wells says that the school is unable to release him because of his LOI. The Tukuafus then respond with cases of Utah State releasing players in other sports that had signed LOIs.
Coach Wells' response was that they can file an appeal with the NCAA (which would take months).
I was told that the Tongan community in Salt Lake is very unhappy with Utah State and coach Wells. I really believe this is going to seriously hurt Coach Wells' recruiting. I think Polynesians will probably elect to go to a JC and then try to get into BYU or Utah rather than go to USU.
Side note, Joe's dad played for the Utes back in the 80s and it will be fun to see them attempt to wear blue in these coming years.
