for casual sports fans BYU success = LDS church exposure
I lived in North Carolina during Jimmer-mania and the Brandon Davies thing. People were talking about BYU, the LDS church and the honor code. Some were making fun, some were shocked but respectful. The point is, it piqued people's interest in LDS doctrine. The teams are not missionary tools in a literal sense, but exposure for BYU = exposure for the church and that generates interest, believe it or not.
