BYU was very good for a very long time.
We won a lot of games and we beat the crap out of the WAC/MWC teams. Fans of those teams have long memories and they remember that. It doesn't matter that BYU hasn't been that good lately. Those fans still hold a grudge.

It kind of reminds me of the Dallas Cowboys. A lot of people hate the Cowboys though they really haven't been good for a while. (With the exception of last year) However a lot of people have long memories and remember when the Cowboys were really good back in the 70's, 80's and 90's and were winning Super Bowls and constantly on TV and were dubbed "America's Team". A lot of their fans also became arrogant and as a result they're one of the most hated teams in the NFL even though they haven't been dominant in about 20 years.

I feel like BYU is kind of like that.

Of course you add in the fact that we're a religious school and that BYU has a reputation for being holier than thou and self righteous whether that's justified or not and that also explains a lot of the hate.

However the main reason people hate us is because we win and we've been one of the most successful college football programs in the western United States over the last 40 plus years. People wouldn't hate us for being religious if we sucked and were the college equivalent of the Cleveland Browns or Jacksonville Jaguars.
