fork over an extra buck for better talent. That's how we got this problem in the first place. BYU having that attitude that you should consider it some sort of special privilege to work at BYU for way less than market value.

It's not some charity where you go to work for less and feel all special inside. But don't steer attention away from the fact that you really think there's no correlation between investing in the right kind of experience, and continuing to have success. And that's just coaches. There are other things you can invest in for a solid ROI without having to worry about "the appearance of joining Satan" in an arms and $$$ race. Smart businesses aren't cheapskates. They know where to invest. Ironically, BYU and the church understand this perfectly in basically any other area of business. They just don't care about athletics enough to do the same thing there that they do everywhere else. You invest correctly, remain competitive, and BYU football will always take care of itself, so I don't see the issue.

People also need to stop with the idea that BYU "can't" do such and such. Yes they can. It's not about ability, nor is it about some worry of going in the red, because you don't even have to go that far.
