CU and CSU have no love for each other, but they respect the game and the history of the rivalry. Utah doesn't respect the game, nor the history of the rivalry. When you cancel such a rivalry, what you are really saying is we have the upper had today and fear we may not have it again in the future. Better to leave the rivalry now before BYU screws up another season for us in the future. It is as simple as that.
