I think a better argument you could make that is similar to you argument is a point John McEnroe made this morning. He said when he played, people put a greater emphasis on finishing the year #1 rather than the numbers of majors won. In this era, we look more at the number of majors won. I can buy that argument. Federer can finish the year with 3 majors and still not have had the best year overall.
But the majors are the majors for a reason. Some tournaments are more important that others. Guys skipping tournaments doesn't, IMO diminish the game or their records.
