As BGR pointed out below, Roger played a full schedule for 15+ years. He was out the last half of last year...
because of an injury, an injury he had been playing through for awhile. And he played plenty earlier in the year, then chose to rest for the clay court season because his knee did need the rest and he wasn't going to win the French anyways.
Nadal plays unless he is hurt, Djokovic and Murray may be selective, but they still play a lot. And playing a lot has caught up with both of them as they are both hurt right now.
And as BGR also pointed out, players skipping some tournaments to focus on other's is nothing new.
The new young guys will be just fine, Thiem and Zverev already have wins over the big 4 and they will get more.

Why did Roger skip the last 6 months of 2016? Because his knee was in bad shape, he wasn't skipping to try...
