"Speed" is important because you can't defend against the ball if you aren't....

there.  Speed gets you to where the ball is coming down to, technique allows you to defend the pass when the ball actually comes down.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen our guys get burned in 15-20 yard routes and long balls over the years, CBs who are 2-3 yds behind the receivers on those 15-20 yard routes and 3-5 yrds behind on the really deep balls.  If you've watched Cougar football for 30+ years you know what I'm talking about.
