My dad played football at University of Washington (I was actually raised a Husky fan in Seattle so I'm enjoying this season on that front) and still has lingering neck and back issues, also had all sorts of injuries over the years. He redirected our athletic pursuits to other sports based on his experience. They finally caved when I was in 7th grade but I hated it. Maybe I'll take that approach; or maybe I'll take a bit harder line given new evidence since I was a kid.
