There is plenty more you could have done. Adjust your mirrors properly to eliminate blind spots. Or add blind spot mirrors (e.g., convex stick-on mirrors). Anticipate lane changes well in advance so you can monitor traffic behind and next to you for a bit before you make the lane change. Turn your music down so you can hear your surroundings; if a motorcycle is right next to you, you will likely be able to hear it.
