I don’t think you have factual information, but to use your guesstimate, it is still an incredible investment!

For example if BYU took in $1B in tithing each year, they would still be ahead almost 5x the annual investment.

Say 8,000 graduates per year x 38 years of employment x $150,000 average annual income \ 10% for tithing = a whole lot of $$$$$$ in return from thousands of qualified individuals earning good wages because of their education as graduates of BYU

Your invitation to use $1B in tithing to feed the poor for a year instead of providing experience and education at BYU would equate to ‘burying a talent’ when it could be returned tenfold with charitable donations over a lifetime.
