Just looked at the numbers, and here's part of the problem. Two years ago, BYU
reported almost $20M in revenue from sports other than football and MBB. That generated some discussion about where that money was coming from and how crazy that number was. Last year, BYU reported about $6.5M in total revenue from sports other than football and MBB. So the revenue for those sports dropped by almost $13.5M? That must have been catastrophic for BYU, except the total numbers actually went up. Also, total basketball revenue dropped by about $2.3 million dollars last year, but football revenue went up by about $2.1M, so that almost broke even with the losses from basketball. So where did all of this extra money come from?

The answer is that revenue "not allocated by gender/sport" increased from $13.6M to a staggering $37.2M. What on earth is happening here? This just shows how much of a shell game the Equity in Athletics reporting is; you can pretty much put whatever dollars you want wherever you want. If BYU can do it from year to year, just imagine how difficult it is to compare apples to apples for different schools. We do know that BYU has something they call a "tuition allocation" that accounts for a ton of money. Who knows how else money is flowing into the AD, particularly when total revenue continues to soar but we know that TV money and ticket revenues are fairly stagnant (as apparently indicated in the reporting). The point is that it's virtually impossible to make a meaningful comparison, especially when dealing with a private school (Utah's yearly audits make it pretty easy to see what's going on).
