Here is the official statement from the school about BYU athletics being self funded.
"No tithing or tax dollars are used for BYU Athletics. The Athletic Department is responsible for raising all necessary funds to run the department, including, but not limited to: student-athlete scholarships, coaching salaries, as well as facility and program costs for each of BYU's 21 team sports."
