...Thanks for your service. We think the program has stagnated and we're ready to go in a different direction.

We had a nice run 2006-2009 when you had all of Crowton's players in the program but now that the recruits are all yours we seem to have a consistent theme in recent years struggling to have competitive depth at key position groups and this has negatively impacted the program in multiple seasons. It's a pattern that seems to repeat nearly year after year.

Also you have struggled to remain competitive with our in-state rival both on the field and with recruiting and now we see the 3rd ranked program in the state drawing even with us (a couple of blowout embarrassing losses to them in the past several seasons sandwiched around some very narrow/squeaker victories).

Fortunately for this year the schedule was very mediocre and wasn't as difficult as first anticipated (it will likely finish ranked somewhere in the 60's by Sagarin) and we won a few more games than we likely would have if the teams had been as tough as first projected. We started seeing repeated problematic patterns in recent years of playing down to the level of the competition (Nevada, San Jose St, Utah St, UCF, Virginia, Houston, Utah, Washington, Boise St, Memphis etc) and it's cost us victories in several winnable games. We feel that with the coming schedule looking to be even more difficult next year than this season turned out (stroke of good fortune) to be, we need to act now to get this program headed in the right direction while we have the young talent in place to do that.

We appreciate the stability you brought to the program and believe that the development of a big time program is a lot like running a relay race. There are many legs that need to be run with a handing off of the baton in between each leg. We appreciate the leg you ran and believe you did it to the best of your ability. You helped put BYU in position for the last leg to be run and are handing off that baton cleanly and efficiently to the man who will run that anchor leg. Thank you.
