I used to do that, then made this modification.
Put your cast iron pan in the grill, not the oven. Heat it up on the grill. Grill gets much hotter, which is what you want for the great crust and finish. Then transfer the steak to the hot grill, rather than the oven. The rest is the same. Another benefit is you dont have to worry about smoke.
