If he's emotionally and mentally ready, start him.

It's not like sports is going to be his future. Let him get on with his life. I started my senior year at 16 (almost 17) and am so glad. I didn't care I was the youngest. I had opportunities I might not have had otherwise. If for no other reason, ideally he can start earning a salary one year sooner.
