This. We went through this exact scenario a year ago
We didn't realize that locking the rate implied any sort of commitment. The lender scheduled the appraisal on the same day that we locked the rate. We continued shopping and found another lender. The first lender had to hurry and cancel the appraisal, or else we would have been charged something like $500 to cover it.
