Good point. I might support a mandated year suspension by the NCAA for DUI, etc.
But, since that is currently not the case and no NCAA rules are being broken, institutions are free to accept students according to their own institutional rules. And, while we may sometimes lament the fact that BYU's rules basically prohibit us from pursuing these types of prospects, Utah's admission standards don't seem to account for past offenses at the same level. As long as he keeps the institutional rules moving forward, he's fully eligible. And, as long as rules and laws are kept moving forward, we should celebrate these reformed athletes.

A similar double standard seems to exist with regards to team discipline. We cry foul when Utah's discipline seems excessively lenient, while simultaneously wishing discipline of BYU's players was more lenient for similar offenses. As long as the coaches on both sides are reacting according to the law, NCAA rule, and the individual institutional rules (which are admittedly more stringent in BYU's case), I think we can celebrate any athlete who is able to overcome prior missteps.
